Shop Treatment 4
Dicover the eclectic mix of shops and galleries in Carlton and Fitzroy.
Some say it’s the best – and most important – meal of the day. For breakfast, the Rathdowne Street Food Store is a great start in every way. You will find a range of delicious breakfast favourites, and the food store itself includes a selection of homemade preserves and hard-to-find ingredients. From Federation Square take either a number 1 (Coburg) or number 8 (Moreland) tram to Newry Street/Lygon Street (stop 115) and then walk about 350 metres to Rathdowne Street.
With your Belly full, head to Frisckat, focusing on women’s fashion and accessories and the work of Australian and New Zealand designers, that suit women of all ages and styles.
Continue further north along Rathdowne Street, turn right into Richardson Street, and cross over Canning and Nicholson streets to St Georges Road where you will find Fitzroy Therapeutics Botanical Emporium. Massage, kinesiology, osteopathy, naturopathy, Chinese medicine and body treatments are all available. Or you can purchase herbal teas and tinctures, homeopathics, supplements and a range of Australian bush flower essences and remedies.
Just a short stroll away is Pieces of Eight, a gallery and artist workshop featuring contemporary jewellery and object-based work by established and emerging Australian and international artists.
Continue south along Brunswick Street, and stop for a late lunch at a local café or bar. There are plenty to choose from.
Brunswick Street has seemingly never-ending shopping opportunities. Tomorrow Never Knows is a fabulous place for t-shirts, hoodies and jackets made in Melbourne. Then there’s The Greenstore, Melbourne's largest retailer of environmentally-sound cleaning, hair and body care products, hemp clothing, and heat and sleep pillows.
By this time you might feel like a little refreshment and Trampoline Gelato is the place for hand-made gelato. All naturally made with real ingredients, and in almost every flavour you can imagine.
End you da at Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets. To get there you can walk through the residential streets of Fitzroy to Smith Street, or take a city-bound tram along Brunswick Street to Gertrude Street, then link with a number 86 tram to Smith Street. Caz Reitop’s main bar area is a good place to chill out with a cocktail, and the bluestone basement hosts live acoustic music and artistic performances.
