Council projects to save water

Over the past five years, Council has been very active in implementing many water conservation initiatives and has been successful in already reducing its own water consumption by 25%. An example of one of these initiatives is the Water Conservation Showcase Project.

Council’s water saving actions include:

Installing rainwater tanks at Council’s Depots and other Council facilities.
Installing water saving devices at Council’s child care centres, leisure centres and Town Halls.
Recycling water at the Collingwood Leisure Centre with different streams of waste water being collected, treated and returned to the pool.
Installing computerised irrigation to improve efficiency of watering systems in parks and gardens.
Using mulch to maintain moisture in garden beds.
Planting drought tolerant species of grass such as couch.
Undertaking an extensive decompaction and aeration program of many reserves and sports grounds.
Implementing a number of water sensitive urban design projects including the Walker Street Wetlands and Cremorne St Urban Design Project, South Richmond.

Water targets for the municipality
Council has adopted the following water conservation targets:

Yarra City Council - to reduce water consumption by 30% below 2000/2001 levels by 2010 and achieve a further 10% reduction by 2015.
Community - to reduce water consumption by 15% below 2000/2001 levels by 2010 and achieve a further 10% reduction by 2015.
Council has resolved to achieve 10% of Best Practice in Stormwater Quality management for Council managed assets and infrastructure across the municipality. The following water quality improvement targets represent Best Practice:
- Total suspended solids – 80% reduction in the average annual load from that typically generated from an urban catchment.
- Total phosphorous and total nitrogen - 45% reduction in the average annual load from that typically generated from an urban catchment.
- Litter – 70% reduction of typical urban load.
