Yarra Fairtrade Community

What is fair trade?

Fair trade means sharing the benefits of international trade more equitably between consumers, producers and the environment. This means a fair price for their goods (one that covers the cost of production and guarantees a sustainable livelihood); long-term contracts which provide income security; and, for many, support to gain the knowledge and skills that they need to develop their businesses and increase sales.

It's about giving disadvantaged producers such as tea, coffee, and cocoa growers a fair go.

Fair trade in Yarra

In May 2006, the City of Yarra became the first Fair Trade Community in the Southern Hemisphere. In becoming a Fair Trade Community, Yarra has made a commitment to purchase Fairtrade goods where possible and to work together with local businesses, organisations and individual consumers to promote the availability and use of Fairtrade products within the community.

How can I be Involved?

Supporting fair trade can be as easy as drinking Fairtrade coffee, or buying Fairtrade soccer balls. Encourage your work place or local community organisation to use Fairtrade products.
