In May 2006, the City of Yarra became the first Fair Trade Community in the Southern Hemisphere.
Fair trade is about sharing the benefits of international trade more equitably between consumers, producers and the environment. It's about giving disadvantaged producers such as tea, coffee, and cocoa growers a fair go.
In becoming a Fair Trade Community, Yarra has made a commitment to purchase Fairtrade goods where possible and to work together with local businesses, organisations and individual consumers to promote the availability and use of Fairtrade products.
Supporting Fair Trade can be as easy as drinking Fairtrade coffee, or buying Fairtrade soccer balls. Encourage your work place or local community organisation to use Fairtrade products.
