Yarra Environment Strategy
Towards Local Sustainability
2008-2020
In October 2008, Yarra City Council adopted its Environment Strategy
, which sets the direction for environmental initiatives in the municipality for the following four years.
“Every sector in society will need to modify its behaviour to reduce its environmental footprint and increase its resourcefulness in order to move towards environmental sustainability. And we will need to adapt together.” (Yarra Environment Strategy 2008-2020)
Community consultation forums and discussions held throughout 2007 informed the development of the strategy, and led to a collective vision being defined for the City of Yarra:
“A vibrant, liveable and sustainable inner city that the community can be proud of.”
Council has adopted a number of Council and community targets to be achieved by 2012 including:
2012 Council targets
- A carbon neutral status (zero net emissions) for council operations
- 30% reduction in Council’s energy consumption
- 100% conversion to GreenPower for electricity demand
- 50% reduction in water consumption in Council operations
- 25% of council water requirements supplied by rainwater harvesting or treated wastewater
2012 community targets
- 25% reduction in greenhouse emissions across the community (carbon neutral by 2020).
- 25% reduction in water consumption across the community below 2000/2001 baseline year
- 65% recovery rate (by weight) of municipal solid waste for re-use, recycling or energy generation from 2005/06 levels
- An increase in the percentage of Yarra residents using sustainable forms of transport (2011 census from 2001 census)
- 5 community gardens established across Yarra
An Action Plan outlines the tasks and projects to be undertaken over the next four years to work towards achieving these targets.
