Council encourages the community to consider how activities in their everyday life can be made more sustainable.

To promote ideas and inspiration, Council has purchased a comprehensive information package to assist you in making choices that guide you towards a more sustainable lifestyle. This information is presented here in Council’s “Sustainable Living” section of the website.

Council would like to emphasise that the information in this section of our website does not necessarily represent the views of Yarra City Council and should not be quoted as Council's position on any aspect of everyday life. Council welcomes your feedback on the site, contact 9205 5555.

Communal

Help us spread the word about those actions we can all be taking to reduce our impact on the environment.

Food and drink

Locally produced food that is grown in sync with the seasons is fresher, and it doesn't take as much energy to produce it and transport it to you.

Mulching your garden beds improves soil health while preventing water loss through evaporation.

Goods

By purchasing second-hand goods from an opportunity shop, you are supporting a charity, getting a bargain, and reducing the resources required to satisfy your consumption needs.

House

Water-saving habits are those easy-to-learn daily behaviours that can save us thousands of litres (and dollars) over our lives. So get with the program and save those drops that make the wave.

Recreation

Go hiking, bird watch, swim in the sea and simply enjoy nature and your connection to it. It's good for the body and great for the soul.
