Recycling and composting
By reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, we can improve our environment by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, saving water and energy and conserving non-renewable resources.
In December 2009, Council adopted a five-year Waste Management Plan which sets out the actions Council will take to increase the amount of materials being recycled, to expand local composting programs and to increase community awareness about waste diversion options
Council already has in place a number of initiatives aimed at waste reduction and recycling:
Waste Wise is a practical program inspiring Victorians to minimise waste. Yarra City Council is recognised as an accredited Gold Waste Wise organisation. Council has implemented the program at its town halls, depot, leisure centres and golf course.

Swap and share goods and services
Council encourages people to swap and share goods and services to reduce waste to landfill and save resources.
Two online groups listed below help to keep quality, used items circulating, share skills, save money and reduce waste.
Freecycle is an online email network for donating and finding free second-hand goods.
is an online community for sharing resources within your neighbourhood and meeting people in your local area.
Members share items such as sewing machines, vegetables, wheelbarrows, tools, cars, books, washing machines and computers.
