The Darling Gardens Masterplan was developed following public consultation between March 2014 and August 2015.

The plan recognises the aspects of the Darling Gardens which are most valued and protected by the community.

It provides a careful balance between preserving the heritage character of the gardens and introducing minor improvements to enhance the enjoyment and functionality of the park.

Playground upgrade

Council is planning to upgrade the playground facilities in Darling Gardens and is now seeking community input on the location and design.

Feedback from regular park users will ensure that the new and improved playground meets the community’s needs and expectations.

Background

The Darling Gardens Masterplan was adopted in October 2015 following two rounds of public consultation between March 2014 and August 2015.

The Masterplan notes that the existing playground doesn’t provide adequate shade and is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Council is therefore planning to install a new playground.

What kind of feedback are we looking for?

Council is seeking community input on:

  • where within Darling Gardens to locate the new playground
  • the best play-based installations to include in the new playground (e.g. swings, slides, nature play).
  • the most useful complementary features to include at the site (e.g. park benches, picnic tables).
  • the potential for a second area catering to older children and teenagers, and the best features to include (e.g. climbing equipment, table tennis table).

The Darling Gardens Masterplan identifies a budget of $320,000 for this project.

Have Your Say

Help shape the new playground at Darling Gardens by completing the online survey by Sunday 15 May 2016.

If you would like to complete a hard copy of the survey instead, please contact Council’s Open Space Unit on 9426 1427 and we’ll send one your way.

Reference Group

Council is establishing the Darling Gardens Playground Design Reference Group to help inform a future decision on the design and location of the playground.

Expressions of interest for membership in the group are invited from regular users of Darling Gardens. Council will be selecting three regular users of the playground, and three regular users of other aspects of the park. A representative of Clifton Hill Primary School will be invited to fill one of the spots on the group.

To lodge your expression of interest, please fill out this online form by Friday 20 May 2016.

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in two meetings at the Collingwood Town Hall (140 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford). The meetings will be held:

  • from 6–7.30pm on Thursday 2 June 2016
  • from 6–7.30pm on Thursday 16 June 2016

What happens next?

Your feedback on an appropriate location and various features of the new playground, including play equipment and complementary park furniture, will be considered at a Council meeting in mid-2016 and all submitters will be informed of Council’s decision. Council will then develop a draft concept plan for the new playground and call for final community input on the design.
