Yarra Environment Strategy
Towards Local Sustainability
2008-2020
In October 2008, Yarra City Council adopted its Environment Strategy
, which sets the direction for environmental initiatives in the municipality for the following four years.
The Strategy spells out Council’s aim to achieve carbon-neutral status for Council operations by 2012.
Developed through extensive community consultation, the strategy outlines the following Council targets for reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions:
- Zero net emissions for Council operations by 2012
- 25% reduction in greenhouse emissions across the community by 2012
- 30% reduction in Council’s energy consumption by 2012
- 100% accredited renewable energy for Council’s electricity consumption by 2011
- 100% accredited carbon offsets purchased to cancel emissions from non-electricity sources from Council operations
- 10% of Council’s energy requirements met from local renewable sources
