In the City of Yarra there are many local food initiatives that are helping people to buy local food, grow their own produce and share locally grown produce.
Locally grown food helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food transportation and storage, supports local farmers and economies and increases food security and access to fresh healthy produce.
Farmers or local markets are one of the best places to buy locally produced food. Check out the following markets in Yarra or visit the Melbourne Community Farmers' Markets website.
Community gardens are becoming an established urban land use, reflecting a revived interest in localised food supply. Currently Yarra has a number of community gardens. Most are located on Department of Human Services land and are for use by public housing tenants. The North Fitzroy Community garden, Collingwood Children’s farm and Mater St. community garden have open membership. For further information contact Cultivating Community.
Even the smallest courtyard or balcony can produce a variety of vegetables from pots and containers. Being able to pick your own fresh ingredients can save you money, reduce emissions from transportation, a trip to the local shops, and tastes great! For more information about growing vegetables at home visit the external links at the bottom of this page.
Yarra Neighbourhood Orchard Produce Swap: Bring your excess homegrown produce to swap and meet other local food gardeners. The first Saturday of every month, 10am-12pm at Smith reserve (next to Fitzroy pool).
