Yarra City Council’s Greenhouse Savers initiative is a trial program, running until November 2009, for 60 volunteer residential households in Abbotsford that aims to reduce household greenhouse emissions.
Council and its partner ecoMaster, a climate change solutions specialist, are working closely with local residents who have committed to making small changes in their behaviour and lifestyle in order to reduce their household’s greenhouse emissions.
Through the program, each participating household has undertaken an energy audit and committed to achieving at least three of the audit’s recommendations to reduce their environmental footprint. With the installation of a wireless smart meter and a free energy efficient retrofit, participants’ energy usage is being monitored while they work to achieve their commitments.
The program is part of the Yarra Environment Strategy, adopted by Council in October 2008, and aims to achieve a reduction in greenhouse emissions of more than 15% across the 60 households.
Council hopes to roll out the program to the broader Yarra community in 2010.
