What Council is doing
Council is working to reduce its carbon footprint and implement energy-saving initiatives.
Solar on Council buildings
With funding support from the Federal and State Governments, Council has installed solar panels on eleven children’s centres and two community buildings in Yarra:
- Carlton Library
- Holden Street Neighbourhood House
- North Carlton Children’s Centre
- Clifton Childcare Co-operative
- East West Childcare Association
- Gold Street Children's Centre
- John Street Community Early Childhood Co-operative
- Keele Street Children's Centre
- North Fitzroy Childcare Co-operative
- Richmond Multicultural Children's Centre
- Richmond Preschool
- Yarraberg Children's Centre
- Yarralea Children's Centre
All centres are connected to the electricity grid, and most use 2.45 kW systems. Together, these 13 sites will help Council reach its goal of having 10% of its electricity produced from local renewable sources by 2012.
The solar panels also enable children, their families and other residents who use the centres to see solar power in action.
Street lighting
Council is working to reduce the amount of energy it uses by replacing the bulk of its street lights with energy-efficient bulbs.
