Solar panels on the North Carlton LibraryCouncil is working to reduce its carbon footprint and implement energy-saving initiatives.

Solar on Council buildings

With funding support from the Federal and State Governments, Council has installed solar panels on 25 buildings in Yarra:

  • Alphington Bowls Club
  • Alphington Pavilion
  • Burnley Golf Course
  • Burnley Pavilion
  • Carlton Library
  • Clifton Childcare Co-operative
  • Collingwood Depot (Roseneath Street)
  • Collingwood Leisure Centre
  • East West Childcare Association
  • Gold Street Children's Centre
  • Holden Street Neighbourhood House
  • John Street Community Early Childhood Co-operative
  • Keele Street Children's Centre
  • Mark Street Hall
  • North Carlton Childcare
  • North Fitzroy Childcare Co-operative
  • North Richmond Maternal and Child Health Centre
  • Richmond Library
  • Richmond Multicultural Children's Centre
  • Richmond Preschool
  • Ryan's Reserve - Swan Street, Richmond
  • W.T. Peterson Oval (grandstand) - North Fitzroy
  • Yarraberg Children's Centre
  • Yarralea Children's Centre
  • Yarra Youth Centre (Napier Street)

All centres are connected to the electricity grid, and most use 2.45 kW systems.
The solar panels also enable children, their families and other residents who use the centres to see solar power in action.

Street lighting

Council is working to reduce the amount of energy it uses by replacing the bulk of its street lights with energy-efficient bulbs.

Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action

Yarra City Council is also an active member of the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA). Made up of nine local Governments and the Moreland Energy Foundation, NAGA's goal is to achieve significant greenhouse abatement by delivering effective programs and leveraging council, community and business action. Find out more at the NAGA website.

Environment Community Consultative Committee

Council’s Environment Community Consultative Committee was established to provide feedback to Council to help guide Yarra’s environmental programs and policies.

Yarra Energy Foundation

The Yarra Energy Foundation has been set up by Council to provide retrofitting initiatives and education programs for Yarra residents and businesses to help them reduce their carbon emissions.
