The City of Yarra’s corporate emissions comes from a range of sources including Council’s buildings, transport fleet, waste and streetlights.
To reduce the amount of energy used by streetlights, Council is improving lighting efficiency through better technology and more sustainable lighting practices such as delamping and dimming. Council also plans to research possible replacements for existing inefficient lights with more efficient lighting technologies.
Yarra has also committed to purchase 100 percent greenpower (GP) by 2012 (increasing current GP percentage purchases from 50 percent in 2008/9 towards the 100 percent goal in 2012).
Other Council projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emission from its operations include:
- Improving the efficiency of Councils buildings
- Reducing vehicle travel
- Reducing organic waste to landfill
The City of Yarra is also an active member of the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA). Made up of nine local Governments and the Moreland Energy Foundation, NAGA's goal is to achieve significant greenhouse abatement by delivering effective programs and leveraging council, community and business action. www.naga.org.au
