The booklet "Gardening with Native Plants in Yarra" provides a guide to the indigenous vegetation that covered Yarra before European settlement. The advantage of indigenous plants is that they are suited to the soils and climatic conditions of Yarra, and so require minimal maintenance and watering. The booklet describes different plant species to help you plan your garden. It is available by contacting Access Yarra on 9205 5555.
The booklet "Removing Weeds in Yarra and Planting Indigenous Alternatives"
describes 50 environmental weed species threatening urban bushland areas in and around Yarra. Many environmental weeds are plants that have escaped tended situations like home gardens, usually by seed being spread by birds or wind or human activity. The pocket sized booklet is a handy identification guide and contains information about controlling environmental weeds, and recommendations about plants to use in replacing environmental weeds. It can be downloaded as a pdf document or obtained as a hard copy by phoning Access Yarra on 9205 5555.
The Yarra Planning Scheme contains a local policy to encourage the protection of local biodiversity and the few remaining sites of our natural heritage. See http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/planningschemes/yarra/ordinance/22_08_yara.![]()
