Heart Foundation Local Government Awards

Spinning classYarra’s Employee Health and Wellbeing Program was named the national winner in the Employee Health and Wellbeing category at the 2010 Heart Foundation Local Government Awards.

The awards recognise local government initiatives that build a sense of community and encourage people to make healthy food choices and be physically active and smoke-free.

As well as winning the national award, Yarra’s Employee Health and Wellbeing Program also won the state category and topped 23 other entries to be named the best program overall in Victoria.

Yarra’s Employee Health and Wellbeing Program focuses on prevention, with the aim of supporting employees to improve their health awareness, establish a healthier workplace and participate in regular exercise.

The program includes fresh fruit delivery, workplace health checks, and access to Quit and Weight Watchers programs.

The activities, offered at no or minimal cost, are arranged by Council’s health and wellbeing committee, which comprises staff from all areas of Council. The broad representation of the committee ensures that the needs and interests of all employees are catered for.
