Regional History - Settlement and Former Councils

Settlement & Former Councils

Australian indigenous people originally inhabited this area for at least 40,000 years.

Council acknowledges the Wurundjeri community as the first owners of this country.  Today, they are still the custodians of the cultural heritage of this land.

Europeans first settled Melbourne on the northern bank of the Yarra River in 1835.  In 1851, the British colony of Victoria was separated from New South Wales. After Federation in 1901,  this region became the Australian state of Victoria.

Former Councils
