Elections for the Yarra City Council will be held on Saturday 27 November 2004. Nine Councillors will be elected to serve for a period of four years.
The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) recently completed a ward review and as a result, the five wards which have been in place since 1996 have been replaced by three wards
– Nicholls, Langridge and Melba. Each ward will be represented by three Councillors.
For the first time, voting will be based on the proportional representation system. If you are on the electoral roll and live in your ward, you must lodge your vote at a polling place by 6m on election day. A vote can only be cast in the ward in which the voter lives. If you cannot attend at this time, you may lodge a pre-poll vote or apply for a postal vote. Failing to vote carries a penalty of $50.00.
If you have the passion to serve your community for the next four years, you can nominate for election. Nomination forms will be available from the Returning Officer at the Richmond Town Hall until Wednesday 27 October 2004. Completed forms must then be lodged with the Returning Officer by 4.00pm on Wednesday 27 October 2004. A $200 fee applies.
For further information on voting in the elections, please refer to the advertisements which will appear in the local newspapers, contact the VEC Returning Officer, Brian Ritchie on 9427 9200 or visit the VEC’s website at www.vec.vic.gov.au. Information relating to the elections will be mailed to all voters around 15 November.
