Councillor Gurm Sekhon

Councillor Gurm Sekhon was first elected to Yarra Council in 2001 to the former Nicholson Ward and was re-elected in 2002. He was elected to represent Melba Ward in November 2004. Councillor Sekhon is a member of the Finance and Human Services Committee.

What do you hope to achieve as a Councillor?

The heart and soul of Yarra’s suburbs has always been its battlers. And this heart and soul has generated a vibrancy that has attracted new residents who demand new priorities for Council: more child care places; the preservation and enhancement of our precious open space; protection of our neighbourhood character. I strongly support these priorities. And I refuse to accept that we should just grin and bear the disastrous impact upon our health and wellbeing of Melbourne’s inner city traffic grid lock: we need to find new traffic and transport solutions – and lead the way for the rest of Melbourne.

The highest priority of all, however, is still to keep the heart and soul of Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy alive.

What are your particular areas of interest?

I’m particularly interested in supporting those doing it toughest. Young families living in tiny apartments or crumbling old houses; older residents who laboured to buy houses when Richmond, Fitzroy and Collingwood were considered slums but who now find that gentrification of their neighbourhoods has brought impossible living costs for retirees; the third of Victoria’s public housing tenants who live in these suburbs; local people doing it tough on the streets after no longer being able to afford the rising rents; Indigenous people for whom Yarra is a political epicentre; school kids looking for recreation and school leavers looking for safe, properly paid and meaningful work.

In the end, my vision for Yarra is simple – I’d like it to remain a place where all of us, even the battlers, would want to live for the rest of our lives.
