Councillor Kathleen Maltzahn

Councillor Kathleen Maltzahn was elected to represent Nicholls Ward in November 2004. She is Chair of the Finance and Human Services Committee.

What do you hope to achieve as a Councillor?

I want to strengthen our community advisory committees to ensure that more people can be more involved in real decision-making. I want to challenge disadvantage, discrimination and violence whether based on ability, sex, ethnicity, income or anything else. We need to protect Yarra’s diversity and continue to offer a place for progressive community organisations, who are being priced out. I am also interested in environmental and sustainability issues, and want to address issues such as transport and energy consumption. I will also focus on planning for parks, streets and buildings in order to protect and extend the City’s breathing space and heritage.

What are your particular areas of interest?

I’ve worked to challenge violence and inequality for 20 years. I want to continue this work at the City of Yarra. I want to be part of a Council that takes the big challenges of the 21 st century head on, whether that be in terms of transport, liveable cities, violence, energy equity, or community participation.
