Cr Stone was elected unopposed as the City of Yarra’s Mayor in December 2008.
A community activist involved in campaigns to protect Yarra’s liveability and heritage, Cr Stone said she was pleased to be leading a focussed Council team.
“My fellow Councillors and I come from different backgrounds but we have very similar visions for what we want to achieve for the people of Yarra,” Cr Stone said.
She said there was a real need to improve the city’s liveability, which meant the Council must respond better to long-standing challenges including pressure on open space, traffic congestion and managing conflict between residents and neighbouring commercial/industrial properties.
Other priorities included: addressing the need for more local childcare places, and facilitating more affordable housing options so the city’s diversity was maintained.
Having grown up in Orbost with the Snowy River at the bottom of her family home, Cr Stone has a special passion for protecting the Yarra River from built developments, to ensure residents “have a place to go to get away from it all’.
A secondary school teacher and student welfare coordinator, Cr Stone holds a Bachelor of Arts and Diplomas in Education and Child Psychology.
She was a founding member of the Collingwood and Abbotsford Residents’ Association, sits on the Board of one of Australia’s longest-serving aid agencies Action Aid Australia and is a member of the Greens.
Cr Stone was elected to Yarra Council in November 2008 as a representative of Langridge Ward, which includes Clifton Hill, Fairfield, Alphington, Fitzroy, Collingwood and Abbotsford.
She represents the City of Yarra on the following committees: the Metropolitan Waste Management Forum, IMAP (Inner Melbourne Action Plan) Implementation Committee, the Darebin Creek Management Committee, Collingwood Children’s Farm Management Committee and Mayors For Peace.
