A Yarra resident for more than 30 years, Sam Gaylard believes Council must provide strong leadership to encourage local residents and businesses to tackle big issues such as climate change.
Cr Gaylard was elected to Council as a representative of Nicholls Ward (covering North Carlton, North Fitzroy, Princes Hill, and parts of Fitzroy and Clifton Hill) in November 2008.
Having worked in local government and then represented council workers as an industrial officer with the Australian Services Union, he is a believer in the power of local government to do good for its communities.
“As the level of government that is closest to its people, local government is in the driver’s seat when it comes to actually effecting change,” Cr Gaylard said.
“We need to make it as simple and inexpensive as possible for energy efficient measures to be introduced into local homes and streets – whether we do that through brokering bulk purchasing deals or facilitating mass installations down streets for economy of scale.
“We should lead the way in introducing Copenhagen-style separated bicycle lanes in busy local streets such as Gertrude, Brunswick and Rathdowne Streets.”
A father of four who lives with his family in North Fitzroy, Cr Gaylard is keen to defend the local landscape - and in particular the Yarra River corridor - from inappropriate development.
He is a Member of the Greens and works as an electorate officer for Northern Metropolitan Region MP Greg Barber.
He sits on Council’s Finance and Human Services Committee and Bicycle Advisory Committee, and represents Council on the Merri Creek Management Committee.
