Brunswick Street Affordable Housing Project
An affordable housing project is proposed for 239 Brunswick Street, which is owned by Yarra City Council.
Council has recently entered into a 40-year lease of the property to Yarra Community Housing, which is proposing to build a four-storey building with 14 studio apartments and retail space on the ground floor.
This project has received funding approval under the Commonwealth Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.
In mid-September 2009, a planning permit was submitted with the Minister for Planning for the project.
The planning application - including technical drawings, a traffic management plan and shadow diagrams – can be viewed at the Richmond Town Hall (333 Bridge Road, Richmond) during normal business hours. Here are some images

Under the Stimulus Plan, the Minister for Planning (rather than Council) is the planning authority who will determine the permit application.
Council is providing feedback on the application to the State Government Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD).

If the permit is approved, demolition works are expected to commence in mid-October 2009. Construction is expected to start in November 2009 and be completed by November 2010.
A detailed construction management plan will be developed by Yarra Community Housing and approved by Council to ensure the impact on surrounding businesses and residents is minimised.
